If you haven’t heard of this product you’ll be genuinely SURPRISED by what we have to say. If your business is growing but the expense of an SQL Server doesn’t make sense for you this is your answer. MSDE, or Microsoft Desktop Engine (also referred to as Data Engine) is a limited version of SQL Server that is FREELY distributed! Yes folks you heard it here, Microsoft has a free product for you to use for your database needs. There are some licensing restrictions but generally all of our custom development using this product saves the customer THOUSANDS in fees and hardware purchases. Need it Web enabled? No problem! Of course we need scheduled backups right? No problem! Again we can develop whatever application you need with your bottom line in mind.

So what’s the catch right? Well we will tell you. Microsoft has made this available as an entry level product that is SCALABLE. The intent is as your business grows you will need to upgrade to the SQL Server product. This is not an unreasonable assumption as many of the management features of the full SQL Server product are not available through the MSDE. This also makes it easier for software companies to come up with low cost database solutions with higher cost “big brothers” usually released as the ever present “Enterprise Solution”.

Best of all, when you begin your database development on MSDE and later upgrade to full SQL Server you don’t loose data and the implementation simplified saving you the customer A LOT of money!
